Originally by: Benco97 thats pretty cool but a lot of people forget that your speed doesn't count for much if the servers you are requesting info from don't pump it out at such high speeds. I see adverts for all these supermega 12meg connections and things like that and I think "well that's handy, i'll bet none of the servers I visit can handle that" Still, Well done, that's pretty cool.
You're wrong there buddy. Being a Brit I recently signed up to BT Broadband, which was advertised as being up to 8MB fast. That is largely BS, since it varies on how close you are to major pipelines.
Luckily for me I'm just above an exchange . Which means that on average my speed is 6.5MB/s, and occasionally reaches 8MB/s. Let me tell you, it makes a huge difference. Downloading the entire EVE client in 25 minutes. Downloading steam updates in a matter of minutes. Downloading the latest Veto video in about 3 minutes. It rocks my world.
EDIT Forgot to mention, when I was using Verizon broadband in America, it totally sucked my left nut. Downloading the things I do would have taken 20times as long.
uh, you are making NO SENSE.
What you argue as the other post being wrong is in fact correct.
If the server can only upload at 128k/s, you sure can not download from it at 8m/s.
read, understand, then post (what you should have done)...or read, post, insert foot in mouth (what you did)
By your logic, I have a 1G/s NIC, so I can download at 1G/s where ever I am...which isnt about to happen due to the actual line speed of the provider+upload speed of the servers+traffic through the nodes effecting speed and causing corrupt packets = much slower then the card can do. (apology, the quote said pirate, ddint notice it was the pirate icon)
Erm, how about YOU make no sense...
Granted, he should be writing 8mbit/s and not 8MB/s, but he's right, you can get that speed connection. I'm on a 8mbit blueyonder connection. True, if i'm downloading from someone who only has an upload speed of 128k then I'm only going to download at 128k, but if I'm downloading from someone with 100mbit upload of course I'm much more likely to get 8mb...
Yes, if the server is only on 128k then I'm limited to 128k, but honestly, when was the last time you downloaded something from such a slow server?
True, for a generic web page the difference between 1mb and 10mb is barely noticeable, but if, like he mentions he does, you download lots of large files from mirrors with plenty of bandwidth, the 8mbit connection is fine...
